This 1hour 45 minute course, delivered to groups of up to approximately 8 persons, is held in the 'lakeside classroom' (in the nice1 shop) at Quay Swim Lake, Mytchett.

The course covers the fundamental elements to prepare swimmers to take part safely in Cold Water Swimming.

The breadth of course content is designed to impart applicable knowledge and confidence to all participants. Central themes are as follows:                                       

  • Safety
  • Pre-Swim Prep
  • Acclimatisation
  • Cold Water Shock
  • Diving Reflex
  • Cold Incapacitation
  • Hypothermia
  • After Drop
  • Re-Warming
  • Post Script, including: Hormones, Refs.

Includes:  Course notes.

A bit about Dave

Dave has an Honours Degree in Biological Science at Reading University and has been head of Biology at a local secondary school for over 30 years.He has used this science base to underpin the content of this course. Being a cold-water swimmer himself, he can empathise with how the cold water theory is put into practice.
